Resource for Training Grant Evaluations
Regular assessment of training grants provides feedback on what goes well and what needs to be improved. It is an important way
to dynamically manage a training grant and to do in-time adjustments to program features. Assessment must be integrated into a
training grant from the beginning to measure the value-added benefits to graduate students and faculty. Development of an assessment
plan starts with the development of the proposal of the training grant. This website is intended to be a centralized source for
tools to assess graduate training grants. The list of all current training grants should facilitate building of a community of
faculty to take advantage of each other's expertise and provides and entry point for those interested in developing a training
program.
To simplify locating what you need, the site has been organized into logical groupings that, we hope, should be intuitive as possible. The links found at the left hand side of the page provide access to these groups. We provide an overview of each here.
About
Provides context around how this site and its materials came into existence.
Approaches to Evaluation
This page provides a short overview about the evaluation process, the types of evaluation and the major
components of evaluation with links to further sources of information.
Evaluation Tools
This page provides sample instruments used in training grants here at the University. A "seed" sample set
derived from IGERT: Non-equilibrium Dynamics is provided. Current and past grant holders are encouraged to
submit their evaluation tools and instrumentation to be openly shared. Also provided here are sample
pre-proposal content and budgeting.
Grant Opportunities
This page provides information about the major training grants offered through the National Science
Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Current UMN Grants
This page provides an index of UMN faculty that have held or currently hold training grants. The information
was obtained directly from the NIH and NSF. If your grant is not currently listed or the information about
your grant is inaccurate please notify us either through the
feedback form or directly via
our contact page.
UMN Resources
This page provides a short directory of the most common resources at the University that faculty should be aware of and have on hand. The list is far from complete and suggestions for other resources we may have missed are always welcome.
Faculty Group
The faculty group provides guidance for the site along with meeting twice per year to discuss issues around conducting evaluations and evaluation best practices.
The tools were originally developed by Drs. Dohm (Director of the Office of Measurement Services) and Neuhauser (Professor and Head,
Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior) to provide continuous assessment of the IGERT: Nonequilibrium Dynamics. We
received a grant from the University of Minnesota Graduate School in 2007 to make these tools available to the community.
